The Mental Health Commission published Version 2 of the Rules Governing the Use of Seclusion and Mechanical Means of Bodily Restraint pursuant to Section 69(2) of the Mental Health Act 2001. The rules are relevant to all approved centres.
The rules were updated following an independent review which involved an extensive stakeholder consultation.
The Commission issued an addendum to Version 2 of the rules. The purpose of this amendment is to ensure that patients placed in seclusion are adequately observed for the duration of the period of seclusion. The addendum should be read in conjunction with the rules.
The Commission has also developed What you need to know about the Rules on Seclusion and What you need to know about the Rules on Mechanical Restraint for service users, carers and advocates.
