100% compliance for Dublin mental health facility
We have this morning published inspection reports on two of the country’s inpatient mental health centres and found 100% compliance in one centre in Dublin.
The Inspector of Mental Health Services, Dr Susan Finnerty, said it is encouraging when a mental health service receives full compliance at inspection, particularly when the centre in question has improved its overall compliance rating by 16%.
“The inspection found that each resident had a multi-disciplinary care plan, developed and reviewed in collaboration with the resident with clearly defined goals, associated interventions and resources in place for each resident,” said Dr Finnerty. “There also was a wide range of therapeutic programmes offered by the multidisciplinary team, which were based on residents’ assessed needs. This provides patients with the best opportunity on their own personal journey on the road to recovery”
The Chief Executive of the Mental Health Commission, John Farrelly, said it is important to recognise the achievements of any facility that receives 100% compliance, thereby shining a light on best practices.
“When a service puts the patient at the centre of everything they do, it gives itself the very best opportunity to achieve full or very high compliance, something that should be achievable by each service in the country.”
Highfield Hospital is an independent provider delivering general adult mental health services to 18 – 65-year-olds and care of the elderly located on the northside of Dublin. The approved centre caters for 112 residents. Highfield is based in a hospital complex that also incorporates an Alzheimer’s care centre and Elmhurst Nursing Home. It provides care to adult and older persons living with mental health issues, dementia, and other associated challenges of ageing.
At the inspection, the premises was found to be well-maintained and furnished with modern and elegant decor. Each unit had access to suitable activities, day rooms and well-maintained grounds or rooftop gardens. A coffee shop and chapel were situated within the hospital complex.
The centre received an overall compliance rate of 100%, which was up 16% from its rating in 2020. There were no conditions attached to the centre at the time of inspection.
The National Eating Disorders Recovery Centre is a privately-owned inpatient treatment facility located in Dublin that is registered for the care and treatment of adults with an eating disorder. At the time of the inspection, the centre was not open, but it was envisaged that it would be open to inpatient residents in early 2022.
The centre is a large semi-detached house that had been renovated and refurbished for the purpose of providing both an inpatient and outpatient facility for the treatment of eating disorders. The inpatient treatment facility was not open at the time of inspection but is registered for the care and treatment of adults with an eating disorder. The outpatient facility is providing assessment and treatment for both adolescents and adults.
As the centre had no residents at the time of inspection, it was inspected for compliance against four regulations; health and safety; operating policies and procedures; insurance; and the certificate of registration. The centre was compliant with these four regulations at the time of the inspection.
