The Office of the Inspector of Mental Health Services consists of the Inspector of Mental Health Services and a multi-disciplinary team of Assistant Inspectors. The role of assistant inspectors is to assist the Inspector of Mental Health Services in the discharge of their duties. As required by the Mental Health Act 2001, the Inspector is a Consultant Psychiatrist. Every year, the Mental Health Commission is required to inspect and regulate all approved centres across the country. There are many different types of approved centre providing a range of mental health services.
The Inspector of Mental Health Services, who is a Consultant Psychiatrist, is appointed under the Mental Health Act 2001 by the Mental Health Commission.

Currently, out of all other community mental health services, only 24-hour residences are inspected by the Mental Health Commission on a three year rolling cycle.
