The Office of the Inspector of Mental Health Services consists of the Inspector of Mental Health Services and a multidisciplinary team of Assistant Inspectors. The role of assistant inspectors is to help the Inspector of Mental Health Services to fulfill their duties. In line with the Mental Health Act 2001, the Inspector is a Consultant Psychiatrist. The Mental Health Commission must inspect and regulate all approved centres across the country every year. There are many different types of approved centres providing a range of mental health services.
The Inspector of Mental Health Services, who is a Consultant Psychiatrist, is appointed under the Mental Health Act 2001 by the MHC.
The MHC works to fulfil its main functions under the legislation through the registration and inspection of approved centres.
At present, the MHC inspects community mental health services that are 24-hour residences. We inspect these every three years.
